The owner's book says not less than 14 deg F, but I would not use it less than 40 deg F. The book shows 10/40 good to over 104 deg F
My Yamaha Virago(air-cooled) book says 40 deg F and above 20/40-------40 deg F and below 10/30.
I run the 10/40 Mobile 1 motorcycle oil all year and do not have any problems.
It sounds to me that your oil checks are very consistent ("cold while it's been sitting over night at least a day or so on my motorcycle jack").
I cannot explain your apparent loss of oil.
I would think that hot oil would expand enough to make a half window sight expansion.
